Getting started with YouTube Advertising

YouTube advertising is all about the content, so ensure you have created a great video for your campaign. YouTube advertising does not have its own dedicated platform, instead you can upload your video to YouTube and then set up your campaign through your Google AdWords account.

Ad Types + Placements

There are two types of ads that can be run on YouTube, which are broken down into Video Discovery ads and In-Stream ads. Video Discovery ads can show up in one of three placements – the YouTube homepage, search results pages, or as related videos. In-Stream videos come in two formats, skippable and non-skippable. Skippable ads must be between 12 seconds and 6 minutes in length and appear before the video the user has selected. Non-skippable ads must be between 12 and 15 seconds and can appear before, mid-way or after a video.

YouTube advertisements are priced through a daily budget, which you can choose to spend one of two ways. Standard delivery shows your ad evenly during the day for the duration of the time you’ve chosen to run your campaign. Accelerated delivery gets your ad out to as many people as possible as fast as possible – a great way to stay on top of trends. As well as choosing your daily budget, you can select the max bid amount you’ll pay per video view. YouTube will simultaneously show you your reach and spend as you adjust.

YouTube ads initially allow you to choose the location of your audience, as well as excluding locations. Once you have chosen that, you can further define your audience through gender, age and interests. YouTube’s advanced targeting means that you can also target individuals using keywords, placements and remarketing.
Video content is a must-have as part of your content strategy, and can be used throughout social platforms. In fact, video content has been proven to work far better in reaching and connecting with audiences than static graphics. In order to run successful ads on YouTube, ensure your content is engaging enough to obtain and retain the attention of an audience that is there to watch something else.
